From supporting new business growth to promoting educational opportunities to fostering racial reconciliation in the post-civil rights era, UM programs harness expertise and resources to bolster our communities, impact real-life issues and stimulate the economy. The following programs are part of a greater mission to advance Mississippi, promote justice and improve our daily lives. Where the academy's theories meet real world pragmatism, together we can guide Mississippi along the course of progress.
Through programs across the University of Mississippi campuses and initiatives in K-12 public schools, UM faculty and administrators are reaching students in every corner of the state. Their goal is an urgent one, tied to Mississippi's hopes for better quality of life and economic growth: to transform and enrich education.
From the laboratory bench to the marketplace, in the school cafeteria or the pharmacy, health researchers across the University of Mississippi's campuses are seeking cures and treatments for the chronic diseases and health disparities that affect far too many Mississippians. Whether their research addresses the health concerns most prevalent in the state or those that pose a global challenge, these University of Mississippi researchers are helping Mississippi form a growing biomedical sector, minimizing the economic strain associated with poor health and helping people live healthier lives.
The past itself may be fixed and final, but our understanding of it is anything but. From celebrating the blues musician and the household cook to connecting residents with their Native American heritage, the University of Mississippi is reshaping the way the world sees Mississippi—and the way Mississippi sees itself.
Working in settings from the woodland landscapes protecting Mississippi’s rich plant diversity to the rivers and water bodies supporting our ecosystems, University of Mississippi researchers are preserving our state for coming generations. They’re searching for forward-thinking solutions to benefit Mississippi’s farmers and fishermen while protecting both land and sea, and leading the way in crafting the plans, policies and technologies to improve the way Mississippi recovers from natural disasters.
